Congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA) and were recipients of a “Delegation of Excellence” certificate for the school and Ethan who received an Outstanding Delegate Award!
From November 5th-7th, twelve middle school students from St. Martha School participated in the Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA), an experiential learning program in which students serve as part of a model state government. During these 3 busy days, students introduced a bill in front of the assembly, asked questions, debated, and actively learned first-hand about the legislative process. The bill our students introduced was an act to limit school start times to 8:30 A.M. or later. In supporting this act, its bill sponsors argued that moving the school start time would add sleep, alleviate stress, increase student alertness, and improve the overall quality of life. Delegates also ventured to the state capital, where they took part in questions and debates on the floor of the Kentucky House of Representatives. During closing ceremonies, St. Martha School was recognized with a Delegation of Excellence Award and 8th grader Ethan was also singled out with an Outstanding Delegate Award. All students enjoyed the interactive experience and learned a great deal about our democracy and state government!
We are so proud of our students for learning more about how our government works and stepping out of their comfort zones! #stmartharocks
