Intermediate Grades

THIRD GRADE

GOALS & EXPECTATIONS:

In third grade, organizational skills are important. We ask students to take greater ownership of their own learning. They should read and follow directions independently and be a self-advocate when they do not understand something by asking questions. Textbooks are no longer consumable and will be brought to and from school on occasion. Students are expected to write down homework nightly in their student planners. Students will (after teaching of this skill) be expected to answer all questions in complete sentences including a part of the question in the sentence. Neatness is also expected on all work. There are tests in all subject areas, allowing students to develop good study habits/skills.

CURRICULUM:

Using a thematic approach, religion explores the mystery of God, Life, the Holy Spirit, and Church. The main tasks for religious education are moral formation, teaching to pray, community life, liturgy, and knowledge of faith. Music, web support, eBooks, and textbooks aid in engaging students to live out their faith by actions.

Our 3rd-grade Language Arts uses a curriculum that seamlessly integrates science and social studies with language arts skills. This curriculum is based on fundamental principles that include promoting analysis, expression in reading and writing, fostering vibrant conversationalists, and instilling a strong grasp of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling through explicit instruction and daily writing practice.

In our Language Arts class, we emphasize both structured and informal discussions, nurturing students’ ability to comfortably use complex vocabulary in a scaffolded and supported context. These discussions are combined with independent exposure to complex texts, helping to build a solid foundation of background knowledge for strong comprehension.

We also utilize an individualized, interactive online program called Lexia. This adaptive platform meets students where they are, enabling them to further develop their skills in phonics, syntax, and other critical literacy skills.

Our goal is to provide a rich and engaging Language Arts experience that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of the subject. Our expectation is that by the end of the school year, each student will be able to read at or above a 3rd-grade level.

Envisions Mathematics focuses on deep conceptual math understanding aided by visual models and personalized learning. Simple Solutions is used as a daily spiral review to practice grade level skills and introduce new concepts that will be taught throughout the school year. A large focus is placed on math fact fluency (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). This is a classroom and school wide initiative. Teachers utilize an individualized, interactive online program called IXL. This adaptive platform meets students where they are, enabling them to further develop their mathematical competency.

Third grade will explore the following concepts: multiplication and division within 100, geometric measurement, representing and interpreting data, place value, fractions, rounding and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects, shapes and their attributes

Math is taught in a hands-on, problem-solving way. Basic facts (through 18) in addition and subtraction are studied at the beginning of the year, and multiplication facts (through 12 x 12) are expected to be mastered by the end of the year. Students also learn skills such as identifying, adding and subtracting fractions and decimals, measurement in customary and metric systems, money and time concepts, place value, geometry, and algebraic patterns. We also utilize an individualized, interactive online program called IXL. This adaptive platform meets students where they are, enabling them to further develop their 3rd grade math skills.

Science follows the Next Generation of Science Standards. In 3rd grade, science comes alive through an innovative approach that integrates seamlessly with our language arts curriculum. We believe in the power of hands-on activities, where students are encouraged to explore and discover the wonders of the world around us. Our lessons are not just about memorizing facts; they are student-driven, inquiry-based experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a deep understanding of the natural world. Join us on a journey of exploration, where science becomes an adventure and a lifelong passion.
